In cooperation with SVI, an Italian volunteer organization, the Karimojong are expanding on their pastoralist traditions and embracing new methods to utilize their cattle and other local natural resources. The Amler Ox Demonstration Farm in Nakapiripirit District was started in 1984, and has since trained Karimojong to use their cattle – traditionally a source of milk, meat and blood only - for ploughing, weeding and transportation. The farm procures implements for farmers, trains people in appropriate technology applications, and brings local farm products to market. A recent venture is a leather tanning project, based on the Karimojong’s traditional tanning methods and using only local materials.
