The government of Sweden has set aside 1,215,000 SEK for the development of a Sami cultural center in Lovozero, Russia, a main population center for the Russian Sami. The contribution is intended for renovation and refurbishment of a main building in Lovozero, where they will establish the cultural center, a workshop for production of Sami handicrafts, offices for the local Sami association, and produce Sami radio broadcasts. The government’s contribution aims to help to strengthen the Sami cultural identity and build links between Russian Sami and their Scandinavian-based cousins.
