SOUTH AFRICA: Nama Natives Question Impact of New Conservation Park

Officially signed on Friday, the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld transfrontier conservation park will be built between South Africa and Namibia, establishing one of the largest protected areas in the world at more than 19 million hectares. This massive preservation effort, however, worries the Nama people, the nomadic pastoral natives who inhabit this land. Following continual political battles for grazing rights to the area as well as to retain decision-making power over its development, they doubt the government’s plans.
