On Monday, August 25, president Toledo of Peru and president Lula da Silva of Brazil reaffirmed their decision to develop a strategic alliance between the two countries. Among the several agenda items, including infrastructure development, free trade, and sustainable management of biological diversity, the presidents emphasized the importance of preserving traditional knowledge. They further supported the agreements reached in the "Declaration of Cusco on the Access to Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Rights on Intellectual Property of the Group of Similar and Megadiversed Countries."
