Argentinean oil company Pluspetrol, which is exploring natural gas deposits in the Peruvian Amazon, has denied reports that indigenous communities near its Camisea project have been exposed to diseases for which they lack immunity. Activists have claimed that 15 Nanti children died last fall from previously unknown illnesses, supposedly from contact with workers on the project. An anthropologist working for Pluspetrol said that if the reports were true, the company would have heard about it directly from the Nanti.
