PAKISTAN: Affected communities contesting water development program

Indigenous fishermen of Lake Manchar were among the communities who participated in the National Dams’ Affectees Conference, held in Karachi, to protest the government’s mega water projects. The fishermen voiced their grievances against the Right Bank Outfall Drain and the Main Nara Valley Drain, demanding the two drains be stopped. The drains have been dumping toxic discharge into Lake Manchar, contaminating the water and killing the fish. This threatens a centuries-old way of life as many of the fishermen have who have lost their means of livelihood have been forced to migrate to other cities in search of jobs and better living conditions.
