NUNAVUT: Schools pull offensive sections from workbook

Recent objections led schools in the Canadian province of Nunavut to remove sections of a third-grade workbook entitled “Let’s Visit Nunavut”. The workbook contains passages explaining that Nunavimmiut do not have the skills to hold jobs and therefore rely on government welfare, and that a traditional Inuit lifestyle is “no longer the right way to live.” The workbook has been on sale since 1996. Surprisingly, no one had objected to the text until a teacher in Iqaluit photocopied a page for a third grade class.
