NUNAVUT: Elders consulted on place names, history

The Inuit Heritage Trust is consulting with elders across Nunavut in order to document the original names and aboriginal history of the land, checking “every single name, every little bit of coastline” on six large maps brought to community centers. The work is being done in preparation for better, more detailed maps of northern Canada. The best maps of northern Canada are made on a scale of 1:250,000. Every other part of the country has 1:50,000 scale maps. Changing place names will be a slow process. After compiling a list of changes, the Trust will send the information to the government of Nunavut to be approved and then it will be sent on to the federal government.
