NUNAVIK: Human rights inquiry into youth services launched

The Quebec Human and Youth Rights Commission is conducting an investigation into the two youth centers in Nunavik, the largely Inuit northern region of the Canadian province. The inquiry was prompted by numerous complaints that the centers had failed to act when youth were at risk of suicide, facing abuse or had other problems. In the mid 1990’s, a similar government inquiry found that the situation constituted a “crisis”, and made over 70 recommendations that have mostly been ignored. Some observers have criticized the investigation, saying a simple lack of resources is to blame.
