NIGERIA: MOSOP reports widespread fraud in voter registration process

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) last week issued a press release detailing what it characterized as widespread and systematic fraud during Nigeria’s recent voter registration drive. MOSOP observed voter registration in the four Ogoni Local Government Areas, and found a major shortage of registration materials. MOSOP alleges that many temporary registration staff were replaced by members of political parties, and some even demanded money from those seeking to register. The report included recommendations for increasing transparency and grassroots efforts to mobilize voters, including a call for independent international observers to monitor the emerging voter registration list.
