According to a communiqué from Sub-Commander Marcos, leader of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN), the Zapatistas will create new “Good Government Committees” for the purpose of overseeing rebel townships and communicating with external interest groups. Five new committees will be inaugurated on August 9 to serve as intermediaries between senior Zapatista leaders, Maya villages, and the outside world.
