MEXICO: Migrant work draws Zapotecans north

Migration to the United States from Mexico to work as low-wage laborers is at an all time high in the region of Oaxaca, historical and traditional home of the indigenous Zapotec. Proposed U.S. policy to allow migrant workers temporary residency in the United States has residents of Zapotec towns nervous about the future of traditional communal labor practices and indigenous language, which both suffer from the extended leave of able-bodied men and women.
