MEXICO: Indigenous women demand improved healthcare, education

Participating in a forum in San Cristobal de las Casas last week, 400 indigenous women came together to call on the Mexican government to provide better healthcare, education and social support to indigenous communities. The participants also discussed impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement on local economies, and enjoined the government to fulfill peace agreements made with communities in Chiapas. The women further demanded that healthcare and education initiatives are implemented with respect for local indigenous cultures, languages and beliefs.
