MEXICO: High-level human rights office closed by Fox

In a brief statement last week, Mexico announced that its human rights office will officially be disbanded as of September 1, 2003. Many, including Mariclaire Acosta, the under secretary for human rights, view the closing as a sign of failure of the more progressive policies promised by president Vicente Fox upon his election in 2000. The decision is seen as an indication of a serious realignment of the priorities of the Fox administration.
