MALAYSIA: Indigenous communities appeal to rights commission to address needs

Over the last few months the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has received a growing number of complaints concerning the exhaustion of natural resources, rights infringements, and a lack of medical services among the indigenous peoples of Sabah and Sarawak – the Orang Asli; the Orang Asli claim that their land has been taken without their permission and without compensation. Specific indigenous groups including the Ibans, Penans, and the Orang Ulus have voiced their own concerns regarding education, national registration, and health.
