KENYA: Pokot elders set conditions for support of presidential candidate

Sixty elders from the West Pokot district met this week to agree on demands to be delivered to presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta. The Pokot elders are threatening to withdraw their support for Kenyatta, the Kanu party candidate backed by President Daniel Arap Moi, unless he legally commits to a number of conditions designed to promote development in their communities. The demands stipulate that Pokots should be settled in remaining Agricultural Development Corporation farms, qualified teachers in their district should be employed by the Teachers’ Service Commission, more funding provided for area universities and electricity for urban centers.
