KENYA: Maasai elders call for equal education for boys and girls

Maasai elders from the village of Mosiro came together this week to express their objections to the implementation of the government’s recent Children’s Act. More than 20 elders claimed that the way the Act was being put into practice unfairly favored girls over boys in providing education. The new government has run into a number of challenges in delivering on its key campaign promise of free primary education for all Kenyans. In the rush to enroll children, many schools were so full they had to turn away students. The government has said it is working to funnel more resources to ensure those children will have access to schooling.
