More than 10,000 refugees fled to Bireun from the war-torn province of Aceh this past weekend as the Indonesian military began bombing suspected rebel bases. The refugee camps at Bireun are not adequate for such large numbers, being designed to hold only 5,000 refugees. As a result of the massive numbers of refugees, the camps are facing water and food shortages as well as sanitation issues.
