INDONESIA: Seven Indonesian soldiers face charges of civilian abuse in Aceh

Three soldiers are currently on trial, and four await hearings, for beating Lawang villagers during a raid on May 27 in the troubled Aceh region. The soldiers could face up to two years in prison if convicted. This incident occurred in the third week of the Indonesian military (TNI) offensive against the Free Aceh Movement (GAM). While the TNI admits to killing more than one hundred members of GAM, it denies allegations of civilian abuse and murders.
