INDONESIA: Aceh rebels reject Indonesian terms

The Free Aceh Movement (GAM) has rejected Indonesian demands that they drop independence demands in favor of the special autonomy package granted by the Indonesian government last year. GAM spokesman Safyan Daud stated, “We really support the dialogue, but the government should not force us to accept the special autonomy law.” Indonesia gave the rebels a December deadline to cease their demands. More than 2,000 people have been killed in the conflict in the past year.
