The national commissioner on human rights in Honduras, Ramon Custodio Lopez, asserted yesterday that the Honduran police system is corrupt and in crisis, inspiring fear in those they claim to protect. While the police force believes that a lack of guns and resources has kept them from doing their job properly, Custodio believes the solution lies instead in fundamental revision of the force’s approach towards policing. Furthermore, he maintains that the general directors of the police system have been incapable of keeping public security and ought to be immediately removed from their posts. The removal and revamping of the police department must be decided by a judicial review, he said.
