HAWAII: Akaka Bill expected to have major economic implications

The Akaka Bill, which would recognize Native Hawaiians as indigenous, is a current major source of contention between various Hawaiian interest groups. If passed, the proposed legislation would grant Native Hawaiians 147 million in combined federal funding and residual benefits. However, a successful lawsuit would return millions of dollars and thousands of acres of land to the state. Either outcome is expected to have significant effects on the Hawaiian economy.
