GUATEMALA: Rios Montt’s presidential bid suspended

Rios Montt’s presidential bid was suspended by the Supreme Court despite a ruling by Guatemala’s Constitutional Court permitting him to run in the election. The suspension comes in response to activity among political parties challenging the ruling in favor of the former military dictator who ruled during Guatemala’s 36-year civil war in which over 200,000 mostly indigenous people were killed. Until the dispute among political parties is resolved, Rios Montt will not be permitted to formally register as a presidential candidate.
