Despite his violent and repressive reign over Mayan peasants in the early 1980’s, ex-dictator Efrain Rios Montt was registered as a Guatelmalan presidential candidate this Thursday after debates concerning the permissibility of a former dictator occupying the highest office. Though his campaign has already spurred violent reactions, if elected, Montt is promising to raise taxes on Guatemala’s rich and improve living conditions among indigenous communities.
