FINLAND: Logging on Sami land ceases temporarily

The Finnish state-owned logging giant Metsahällitus consented to halt logging operations in disputed old-growth forests until an accord is reached with environmentalists. A conference between the company and said environmental groups will be held on August 13. Home to Sami reindeer herders, the old growth forests comprise 5% of Finland’s forests, and only 2.5% of them are protected.
