FIJI: Schools prioritize teaching indigenous language

The Fijian Ministry of Education has ramped up support for teaching Fijian in primary and secondary schools in response to a decline in indigenous language learning and use. According to a Pacific Islands Report, the teacher-training program at the Fiji College of Advanced Education will award diplomas to 20 students majoring in English and Fijian Education. The ministry hopes to expand the teaching of Fijian to 150 secondary schools by 2006.
