ECUADOR: Tension Between President and Indigenous Groups

CONAIE, Ecuador’s most representative indigenous organization, has presented a list of 82 demands to President Gutierrez, who won elections due to a strategic alliance with the indigenous party Pachakutik. However, since elected, Gutierrez’s administration has assumed orthodox economic and social policies distant from its campaign promises. A series of meetings between Gutierrez and representatives from CONAIE have commenced.
