ECUADOR: Quechua Indians Affected by U.S. Herbicides

Quechua Indians who live in San Francisco 2, a village next to the Colombian border, are being affected by the U.S.-manufactured herbicides being sprayed inside Colombia. The spraying is a key component of Plan Colombia, the coca eradication program supported financially and logistically by the United States. The wind blows the toxic liquid intoEcuador, causing serious damage to the crops and environment, and apparently leading to illnesses among the Quechua and local farmers. “This liquid comes out and covers everything,” according to the president of the Indigenous Association of San Francisco 2. Some 10,000 Ecuadorians are being affected by the spraying, according to Acción Ecológica, a major environmental NGO based in Quito.
