Five fighting militias have agreed to follow the terms outlined in an agreement signed in March that permits national police and army forces to head a peacekeeping mission in the Ituri region. Approximately 50,000 people have been killed here in past years, caught in battles between the rivaling Hema and Lendu ethnic groups. A French-led European Union force will begin the peaceful undertaking on September 1.
