COLOMBIA: Four members of Embera Chami Nation murdered, including mayoral candidate

A group of unidentified gunman shot and killed four members of the Embera Chami Nation and injured four more outside the town of Riosucio, 125 miles west of Bogotá. Among those killed was Gabriel Cartagena, who was running for mayor of Riosucio in Caldas state. According to the National Indigenous Organization of Colombia (ONIC), he had received death threats from right-wing paramilitaries. Indigenous people, especially leaders of indigenous nations and politicians, have been targeted by all parties in this war civil war. In 2001, over 300 indigenous people were killed, and countless more displaced by the fighting and by U.S.-backed coca eradication efforts.
