CANADA: Winds hamper traditional whale hunting in the Beaufort Delta

Beaufort Delta families have had to cope with strong winds in kicking off this year’s beluga whale hunting season. Families typically spend the first three weeks of July at whaling camps, hunting nearly every day. So far this season, bad winds and rough seas have kept many off the water, sharpening harpoons and readying equipment while waiting for calmer weather. Some, however, were too eager to wait.
