CANADA: Mohawk chiefs protest policing arrangement with blockade

Protesters have been blocking one lane on Highway 344, northwest of Montreal, since March 28, and have now extended the blockade because federal officials refused to consult them on a policing arrangement. These protesters are upset that Grand Chief James Gabriel negotiated a policing deal with Ottawa that allows members of the Mohawk, Cree, and Mi’kmaq to be officers on the Kanesatake police force without asking the band council. The three other chiefs that started the blockade are demanding that all the police officers who patrol the reserve are Mohawks.
