CANADA: Aboriginal claims legislation to appear in Senate, ignoring taskforce recommendations

Several bills associated with the First Nations Governance Act, including Bill C-6, known as the Specific Claims Act, may be debated in the Canadian Senate as early as this week. The controversial legislation would reform the current system for resolution of First Nation claims, giving complete decision-making authority on any claims to Ottawa while effectively removing input from the Assembly of First Nations. A taskforce formed by representatives of the federal government and the Assembly of First Nations delivered recommendations on reforming the system, yet Bill C-6, opponents argue, almost completely ignores the task force report.
