In a speech to the United States Senate, the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Patrick Leahy (Democrat of Vermont) voiced his objections to the inhuman treatment of the many people of Burma by the Burmese military government (SPDC). He called on the SPDC to respect the human rights of the people of Burma and to bring those responsible for crimes against ethnic villagers, refugees and the displaced to justice. Leahy also made reference to the recent statement by the Burma Army Column Commander Khin Mau Kyi who said, “ I don't respect any religion, my religion is the trigger of my gun.” Khin Mau Kyi has been reported as being responsible for many of the atrocities in Burma, including the burning of churches and villages and the torturing of Buddhist monks. Leahy stated that he will work closely with fellow Senator Mitch McConnell (Republican of Kentucky) to find an appropriate plan to help the many peoples of Burma and those fleeing SPDC oppression.
