Evidence from eye witnesses links the mayor of Uiramuta, Florany Mota, to the kidnapping of three missionaries earlier this month. The kidnappings are part of larger conflict between indigenous and non-indigenous settlers over Government plans to demarcate lands. It is reported that Mota has also taken part in anti-indigenous demonstrations and has been quoted making anti-indigenous statements.
