BRAZIL: Senator seeks constitutional amendment to limit indigenous territories

Senator Mozarildo Cavalcanti of the Brazilian senate has proposed a change to the constitution which would decrease by half the area of each state that is required to be protected for conservation or indigenous territories. On June 11, Brazil’s senate will vote on this proposal. NGOs, environmentalists, and indigenous peoples alike are working together on a campaign called Protected Areas in Danger to make sure that this change does not take place. Campaigners say they are working to preserve the constitutional rights of the indigenous peoples, and to protect Amazonia land from unsustainable development.
