BRAZIL: MST Leader Arrested in Brazil

On July 11th, Movement of Landless Worker’s (MST) leader José Rainha and his adviser, Felinto Procopio, were arrested by Brazilian police. Rainha faces charges of criminal association and theft for organizing the invasion of a ranch in 2000 and allegedly steeling cattle and destroying crops. Subsequently the MST called for a protest on July 13 where the largest landless encampment is located. The arrests and protests are part of the current clash between landless peasants organized by the MST and land holders in rural Brazil.
