In recognition of the National Day of Indigenous peoples on April 19, representatives of 27 indigenous groups demanded recognition of the Raposa Sierra del Sol reserve in the northern state of Roraima, which has awaited formal approval from the state since 1998. Violent conflict over land rights in the area has recently resulted in the deaths of 29 diamond miners who have illegally entered indigenous occupied lands.
