July 14, 2003 represents the final day where the farmers of Mato Grosso are able to legally use fire to clear their land. Violaters of this ban will be subject to fines ranging between R$ 1,000 and R$ 1,500 per hectare. This law will be in affect for the next two months due to the low levels of air humidity.
