BRAZIL: Court victory for Indigenous Peoples of Roraima

With a recent court ruling in their favor, the indigenous peoples of Roraima achieved a crucial victory in their struggle to gain legal recognition of Raposa Serra do Sol. The land is traditionally home to roughly 14,000 indigenous people of northern Brazil, including Macuxi, Ingarico, Wapixana, and Taurepang. Ranchers and farmers have been encroaching on the land in recent years, despite a law in effect since 1998 demarcating Raposa Serra do Sol. In the Brazilian court's decision, it called for the removal of intruders and affirmed its recognition of the area's special status.
