In its annual report on human rights, the U.S. State Department condemned Botswana's
treatment of the San. "The San remained economically and politically marginalized,
have lost access to their traditional land in fertile regions of the country,
and were vulnerable to exploitation by their non-San neighbors," the report
says. The State Department was specifically concerned with the situation of the
San who were evicted from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The report condemns
the sites to which the San have been relocated, stating that game is scarce and
that the people suffer from a lack of employment and widespread alcohol abuse.
