BOTSWANA: San resume testimony in land dispute

On Friday, November 5, San from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) resumed testimony in the Botswana High Court to challenge their resettlement from ancestral land. The San originally brought their case to the High Court in April 2002, when the case was dismissed on a technicality. The San appealed and won the right to have the case re-heard. Beginning on July 4 of this year, the court adjourned until now to give the San time to raise money to press their case.

San representatives told Robert Hitchcock in the spring 2002 edition of the Cultural Survival Quarterly that the reason they were removed from the CKGR was to make room for private enterprise. After having been delayed since July, the case is expected to last for at least a month.
