In the election on December 18, Evo Morales, 46 year-old member of the Aymara community, was elected to become the first indigenous President in Bolivia. A long-time leader of indigenous and workers’ rights, Morales will assume presidency of the Andean country on January 22. According to Inter Press Service News Agency, Rigobera Menchu Tum, Guatemalan Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said that Morales’ win is "an important precedent in the social struggles of the entire region."
