June 23 marked the launch of the first indigenous radio station in Victoria, as radio 3KND began broadcasting full time on 1503 AM in Melbourne. The radio station’s establishment is a historic milestone: listeners can now tune to Koori radio and hear the perspectives of indigenous individuals on issues and music that has been excluded from the mainstream. The radio will also provide an entrance into the broadcasting industry for the Koori in the form of training and employment.
