The Cenus of Indigenous Peoples (ECPI) began on Saturday October 2 in Gran Mendoza Province. The project, supported by the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs, will take place in Mendoza over the next six weeks and aims to provide documentation about the living conditions of Argentina's indigenous peoples. The census, both for and by indigenous peoples, is the first of its kind in Argentina. The census will visit homes which the 2001 National Census documented as having at least one indigenous resident.
The census consists of one hundred questions administered by census takers in a private home settings. The questions concern not only indigenous affiliation, but language, education, occupation, and standard of living. Each of the 35 census administrators identifies themselves as indigenous.
