UNITED STATES: Shoshone file urgent action request for UN intervention

In the most recent development in the Western Shoshone’ruggle against United States’ seizure of their ancestral lands, the Shoshone have filed an urgent action request with the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. A Western Shoshone delegation appeared in Geneva, Switzerland from August 8-19, appealing to the UN to halt U.S. gold mining and nuclear development plans on their land, according to Indian Country Today.

The Western Shoshone also told the UN that the United States has recommenced efforts to open a nuclear waste dump at Yucca Mountain. The Committee is expected to hear a response from the U.S. government sometime in August.
