On August 24, the United Nations Development Program began a program to protect healthy salmon stocks in the Kamchatka Peninsula and encourage indigenous peoples to stay on the land and care for the environment. The project will grant $3 million in Global Environment Facility funds between 2003 and 2007, while participating partners will offer funds valued at $10 million.
