UNITED STATES: Cayuga Tribe defies NY town’s stop-work order

The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe is continuing construction on a new $25 million bingo hall in Aurelius, New York despite receiving a town issued stop-work order on July 30. Aurelius officials complain that the tribe is in violation of several building regulations and zoning laws, but the Cayuga claim that their sovereign territory is not subject to local law. The dispute will likely be settled in court.
