U.S. lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favor of approving the largest free trade expansion since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was established nearly ten years ago. Agreements with Chile and Singapore mark the Untied States’ fifth and sixth free trade agreements. Agreements such as these have been protested by indigenous peoples around the world. Indigenous rights workers and other social justice advocates allege that these kind of free trade agreements lead to decreased indigenous sovereignty, increased corporate activity, and environmental degradation.
