In talks scheduled to resume on March 1, the Khartoum government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) will discuss the future of three separate sectors of the Southern Blue Nile region, including the heavily affected Nuba Mountains. The Nuba people have long been among the hardest-hit victims of Sudan’s two decade-long civil war, suffering humanitarian aid blockades and bombing with tragic frequency. The agenda for the meeting was revealed by a spokesman for Khartoum at the embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. In a November 2002 convention, the Nuba people indicated their desire to remain in SPLM/A territory in any future partition.
